50 Euro Notre Dame de Paris Coin
This commemorative coin was designed by the artists of the Monnaie de Paris to celebrate the 850 year anniversary of the Paris cathedral.
The gold coin, with a face value of 50 euros, is sold for 450 euros at the store of the monetary institution. The one carrying a face value of 5,000 euros is worth over 63,000 euros… A very significant premium to its weight in gold (1 kg). But a total of only 29 coins were minted.
Notre Dame de Paris is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris. Notre-Dame de Paris is also the title of a famous novel by Victor Hugo published in 1831, the cathedral serving as the setting for the storyline: Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer and his impossible love for the gypsy dancer Esmeralda, itself subject of the desire of renegade priest Claude Frollo.
